CREATIVE MUSIC STUDIO
Creative Music Studio
(CMS)
was founded in 1971 by Karl Berger and Ornette Coleman, two world-renowned luminaries of contemporary new music. CMS quickly became known as the premier study center for cutting edge musicians during its twelve years of existence.
Guiding artists included Don Cherry, Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, Anthony Braxton, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Lee Konitz, Frederic Rzewski, Babatunde Olatunji, Carla Bley, Pat Metheny, Nana Vasconcelos, Richard Teitelbaum, Cecil Taylor, Sam Rivers, and many other musical giants.
CMS folded its wings in the mid-1980's largely due to the restrictive economic arts climate at that time.
The publication of the 1996 book, Music Universe:Music Mind, Revisiting the Creative Music Studio,
by Robert E. Sweet (Arborville Publishing, Inc.), www.arborville.com, renewed international interest in CMS's innovative programs , highlighting the need to re-establish a multi-faceted
center fusing the CMS process with twenty-first century technologies.
NOW CMS IS BACK
FUSING TECHNOLOGIES OF THE 21ST CENTURY
WITH THE PERSONAL APPROACH OF CMS.
CMS was an acknowledged phenomenon in the international music world,
providing participants with the unique opportunity to live, study, work and
record with the creative giants of improvisation and musical thought on a
daily basis. Emphasis was not on a particular musical style, but on
personal expression and the universal elements of all music.
CMS participants had the opportunity not only to attend classes with master musicians, but also to perform and record with them. Guiding artists and participants often lived in the same quarters, ate meals together, and in many cases, forged ongoing personal and professional relationships. Participants came to CMS from all over the world because they knew there was no place like it, anywhere. There still isn't.
Re-emerging with the new millennium,
CMS 2000
is a place to work, study and record with the musical giants of improvisation and musical thought; where participants can attend web classes, concerts, and on-line discussions with guiding artists, no matter where they live.
Whether it's called contemporary new music, extended jazz, experimental electronica, improvisation, progressive rock, world music, avant-garde - whatever the label, CMS is at the cutting edge of all styles of music.
